SVES Testing and Assessment Hub

Throughout the academic year, our students engage in multiple assessments that provide valuable insights into their academic progress. Teachers utilize this data to shape their instruction and make necessary adaptations. The results of student assessments are communicated either centrally through the county or by SVES, depending on the specific assessment.

We have designed the SVES Testing and Assessment Hub as a comprehensive resource for families. The assessments are organized by season (Fall, Winter, Spring) and grade level. Upon selecting your child's grade level, you will find a list of assessments in which your child will participate, along with corresponding assessment dates. To learn more about any specific assessment, simply click on its title.

As you start planning family trips, medical appointments, and other activities that might require your child to be absent from school, we kindly request that you consider these assessment dates. Minimizing the number of student absences on designated testing dates will enable teachers to focus on in-class instruction rather than conducting make-up sessions. Your support is greatly appreciated!

While we strive to maintain these as our designated assessment dates, there may be instances where adjustments are necessary due to school or county requirements. In the event of an assessment date change, we will notify families to keep you informed.

🔁Yearlong Assessments

WIDA Screener for Kindergarten

Test Window: July 17-September 18, 2023 And within 14 calendar days of enrollment (September 20-EOY)

Expectation: Required for Some

Details: Required for all potential ELs in kindergarten. These are kindergarten students with a home language other than, or in addition to, English to fulfill federal screening requirements for potential ELs. Tests administered during semester 1 (through January 25) will include listening and speaking domains only. Tests administered during semester 2 (beginning January 29) will include listening, speaking, reading, and writing domains.

Details: Required for students in grades 1-12 with a home language other than, or in addition to, English to fulfill federal screening requirements for potential ELs. Students entering from a US school (public, private, or home school) are assessed at the base school. Students entering from a non-US accredited international school are assessed at a Student Registration Welcome Center.

Local Alternative Assessment (LAA) - Gr 3 Science/Soc St, Gr 4 VA Studies

Details: Grade level content areas with removed SOL tests are required to administer LAAs to address all the content standards. LAAs include a variety of assessment types.

Lexia

Test Window: initial placement

Expectation: Required for some

Details: Lexia is a web based literacy program that adjusts based on student need. Lexia Core5 is for students in grade K-5. Students in grades K-5 who are new to FCPS take the Core5 initial placement test.  Usage in Core5: students below grade level 10-15 min per day (50-75 min/week), on grade level 10-15 min 3 times/week, above grade level 10-15 min 2 times/week.   Lexia PowerUp is for students in grade 6.  Students in grade 6 take the PowerUp placement test. Usage in PowerUP: 10-15 min per day for all.  Students complete their Lexia usage at school only.

Global Awareness Technology Project (GATP)

Test Window: August 22-June 11, 2024

Expectation: Required for All (Selected Schools)

Details: Grade 5 completes the Global Awareness Technology Project (GATP) each year to develop skills in research, gathering ideas, and communicating ideas. They complete the project with a final presentation that is scored on a rubric.

Early Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS)

Details: EMAS is the required VKRP mathematics assessment for all FCPS K students. EMAS measures a broad range of mathematical areas including numeracy, computation, patterning, and geometry.

Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS)

Expectation: Required for All 

Details: CBRS is the required VKRP self-regulation/social skills assessments for all FCPS PreK students. CBRS measures students' self-regulation and social skills through a teacher completed rating scale.

Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS -K)

Test Window: October 2-27, 2023

Expectation: Required for All 

Details: PALS-K is the state required literacy readiness assessment for kindergarten students, which measures student knowledge of phonological awareness, alphabet recognition, concept of work, knowledge of letter sounds and spelling.

iReady - Passage Reading Fluency (PRF); Word Reading Fluency (WRF)

Test Window: September 5-29, 2023

Expectation: Required for All

Details: Required fall WRF in grade 1 and PRF for grades 2-3 students. WRF and PRF are assessments on iReady that measure a student's ability to acurately and quickly identify words and comprehend passages to gauge their reading fluency and comprehension skills.

CORE Phonics Survey

Test Window: August 22-October 6, 2023

Expectation: Required for Some

Details: Required follow up diagnostic with CORE Phonics for grade 1-3 students who are below the fall iReady reading benchmark (at or below 39th percentile) AND/OR below the fall PRF benchmark. CORE Phonics survey evaluates a students decoding and phonics skills.

Developmental Spelling Analysis (DSA)

Expectation: Required for All

Details: The group administered DSA is delivered as part of the language arts block during the fall assessment window. DSA is used to measure students' spelling abilities and developmental stage in spelling.

Benchmark Assessment System (BAS)

Test Window: August 29 to Oct. 6, 2023

Expectation: Required for Some in grade 3 and all in grades 4-6

Details: The BAS is a diagnostic assessment, which gives the teacher information about decoding, fluency and comprehension using leveled texts. It is done one on one with the teacher. BAS assessments may be done during any of the testing windows as needed.

3rd grade: (EOY benchmark: P)

  • FALL:  assess any student who was below the 40th percentile on fall iReady AND below 50th percent on the fall PRF

4th grade (EOY benchmark: S)

  • FALL:  assess all students who failed the spring SOL or fell below the 40th percentile on the fall iReady

5th grade (EOY benchmark: V)

Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

Expectation: Required for All

Details: Required for all students in grade 2. Parents/guardians may request a one-time ability retake (either CogAT or NNAT) to be administered during this window. CogAT is used to measure students' verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal reasoning skills.

Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) - Reading - Math

Test Window: September 11-29, 2024 (see calendar for specific dates)

Expectation: Required for All

Details: Required reading and mathematics assessment for all students in grades 3-8 to address new General Assembly legislation. 2023-24 fall and winter VGA tests will assess students on their currently enrolled course curriculum. Only grade level tests 3-8 are offered. Retests are not available for VGA.

Details: Required for any students in grades 3-6 who did not test in the October CogAT window and do not have an ability test score on file.  Parents/guardians may request a one-time ability retake (either CogAT or NNAT) to be administered during this window.  NNAT 3 measures students' non-verbal reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

Details: The BAS is a diagnostic assessment which gives the teacher information about decoding, fluency and comprehension using leveled texts.  It is done one on one with the teacher. BAS assessments may be done during any of the testing windows as needed.

Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) - Reading - Math

Details: Required reading and mathematics assessment for all students in grades 3-8 to address new General Assembly legislation. 2023-24 fall and winter VGA tests will assess students on their currently enrolled course curriculum. Retests are not available for VGA.

Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT)

Details: Spring VKRP mathematics assessment required under Virginia law.  EMAS measures a broad range of mathematical areas including numeracy, computation, patterning, and geometry.

Details: CBRS is the required VKRP self-regulation/social skills assessments for all FCPS PreK students. CBRS measures students' self-regulation and social skills through a teacher completed rating scale.

PALS-K

Expectation: Required for All 

Details: PALS-K is the required VKRP literacy readiness assessment for kindergarten students and serves as the measure for Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI) reporting in kindergarten. PALS-K measures student knowledge of phonological awareness, alphabet recognition, concept of word, knowledge of letter sounds, and spelling.

iReady Reading & Math

Test Window: Grades 1-3: April 22-May 17, 2024 (see calendar for specific dates) 

                        Grades 4-6: April 8-May 31, 2024

Expectation: Required for All

Details: Required iReady spring progress monitoring for all grade 1-6 students in grade level reading and math skills. It is recommended that students have at least 10 weeks between iReady attempts.

Details: Required spring PRF for progress monitoring in grades 1-3

  • Gr 1-2 PRF required for all students for state EIRI reporting
  • Gr 3 PRF required for EIRI-identified students (below fall 40th percentile AND below fall PRF benchmark) AND students who do not have a previous PRF measure this year.

iReady + PRF satisfies VDOE spring EIRI testing requirements for grades 1-2.

Details: Required for all grade 1-6 students. The group administered DSA is delivered as part of the language arts block during the spring assessment window.

NNAT3 (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test - Third Edition)

Test Window: April 3-12, 2024 (see calendar for specific dates)

Expectation: Required for All

Details: Required for students enrolled in grade 1. NNAT 3 measures students' non-verbal reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

Limited exemptions are available based on IEP decisions, and limited deferrals are available based on EL committee decisions.

Details: Required reading and mathematics assessment for certain students with significant cognitive disabilities to fulfill federal participation requirements. Reading and mathematics tests are provided in grades 3-8 and 11.
